The Sontronics Mercury is the company's flagship valve condenser microphone, prized in professional studios for lead vocals. Its defining feature is an infinitely variable polar pattern, letting engineers sweep continuously between patterns rather than clicking through fixed settings.

The large-diaphragm valve design adds depth and classic tube warmth without excessive colour, with a smooth, refined high end that flatters expressive vocalists without exaggerating sibilance. Sweeping the pattern control shapes room ambience, isolation and proximity effect precisely for each source, and the modern circuit keeps self-noise far below vintage tube mics. It ships with its own dedicated power supply, so phantom power must stay off.

“Mercury picks up where the multi-award winning Sontronics Aria leaves off with the best possible military grade 1% tolerance components and a 12AT7 valve. The mic comes with a hard flight case as standard, as well as a Bamboo box for the mic itself. Signal and power cables to connect the mic to the PSU and the PSU mains power and shock-mount complete the package. You will be able to tell that James really likes this microphone and the short track which features acoustic guitars and percussion just begins to show off just how stunning the Sontronics Mercury sounds.”

“In other words, if you need to record a variety of different sources, the chances are you’re going to need a variety of different microphones with which to do so. But I do have a criticism. The continuously variable polar-pattern control has markings screened on the casing, showing the pattern at three positions: hard left (at seven o’clock) for omni, straight up (12 o’clock) for cardioid and hard right (five o’clock) for figure-8. Considering the significance of stereo applications with a product like this, and that much is made by Sontronics of the near-identical nature of two examples of the Mercury, it seems to me that more in the way of a visual means of matching patterns between two mics could be important here.”
