The Arturia MicroFreak is a hybrid experimental synthesizer that pairs a multi-engine digital oscillator with a genuine analogue filter in a compact, affordable package. It has become a modern classic for sound designers and producers thanks to the sheer breadth of textures it can generate, from clean virtual-analogue tones to abrasive, evolving timbres.
A single digital oscillator hosts more than twenty synthesis engines, spanning virtual analogue, wavetable, FM, harmonic, granular and Karplus-Strong physical modelling, alongside engines derived from Mutable Instruments' Plaits. After the oscillator, an Oberheim SEM-style analogue state-variable filter (12 dB/oct, low/band/high-pass) shapes the sound. The MicroFreak runs monophonically or in four-voice paraphonic mode and adds a cycling envelope, an ASR envelope, an LFO, a modulation matrix, an arpeggiator and a 64-step sequencer.
